New Year's Greetings from IDPF

2015 was a watershed for both the IDPF and the EPUB standard. The momentum behind the adoption of EPUB 3 has continued to build, as evidenced by the growing repository of test results at EPUBTest.org. IDPF opened European headquarters in Paris, in partnership with the open source Readium Foundation and via the support of the French government. The EDUPUB Alliance work on EPUB and related standards for e-textbooks and other learning content has matured, with complete draft specifications now available. Our collaborations with W3C on aligning EPUB and the overall Open Web Platform to support the needs of the publishing industry have advanced with a new charter for the W3C Digital Publishing Activity. Modular EPUB specifications for indexes, dictionaries and advanced fixed layout were finalized and approved by members. Last, but not least, we have kicked off an important update to EPUB, EPUB 3.1.

A common theme to all of these activities is collaboration. IDPF is a member-run organization, so of course everything we do is a collaboration. We appreciate and rely on your membership dues to support our operations, but your contributions to working groups and other initiatives are even more critical to our collective success in advancing our mission to support a global interoperable ecosystem for digital publishing. And as EPUB takes its place as the next-generation portable document format based on Web Standards, supporting the need for structured, accessible and mobile ready publications, we are increasingly partnering with a wide range of organizations and stakeholders from many fields of publishing.

2016 promises to broaden and deepen our collaborations, in the interests of fostering an even larger and more valuable ecosystem around EPUB and publishing for the Web. Key accessibility initiatives are maturing in the United States, Europe and other regions with implications for the need for EPUB certification with accessibility as a baseline that we will discuss, along with next steps for the EDUPUB Alliance, in meetings in Baltimore on February 25-26, in partnership with IMS Global, W3C, BISG and DAISY Consortium. Our first EPUB Summitevent will take place in Bordeaux in April and our flagship conference IDPF DigiCon@BEA will take place in Chicago on May 19-20, and will feature a new track on Academic & Professional Publishing, co-sponsored with the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP).

Thank you for your support of the IDPF and I look forward to working with you to continue to grow our community in 2016.

Bill McCoy
Executive Director, IDPF
